09/12/10: Nippers' swims moved due to rough conditions
![]() |
Nippers from Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Club took on some rough conditions to be part of a meet at Bonny Hills on Sunday (5th).
A total of 13 Macksville-Scotts Head nippers were at the event, which had to be relocated during the morning session due to rough surf conditions and the high tide.
The swimming events were held in Lake Cathie during the morning. Onlookers endured miserable conditions before the weather cleared during the afternoon, but the participants enjoyed the calm, warm water of the lake.
The swims were still a challenge, with distances longer than usual.
Macksville-Scotts Head participants had a successful and fun meet, with Elise Sutherland taking out the under-13s swim section.
The results on the day were:
Under-9s: Lucy Spain – fifth in boards, third in flags, fifth in sprint.
Under-11s: Garth Watson – fifth in the flags.
Under-12s: Peta Salter – sixth in swim, fifth in flags; Claire Spain – sixth in flags.
Under-13s: Elise Sutherland – first in swim; Sophie Atkins – fourth in swim and fourth in boards.
The next nippers competition will be held in February next year, but Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Club will hold a Christmas party barbecue this Sunday to celebrate the silly season.

03/11/10: Nippers' great season start
![]() |
A team of 17 nippers from Macksville-Scotts Head Junior Club set off to Hat Head for the first interbranch qualifying carnival for the season on Sunday, November 7.
This was the very first carnival for our under-9's competitors and they should be proud of their efforts.
A big high for the day was Elise Sutherland's win in the under-13's swim with a massive lead of around 25m. Well done.
There were also some well-earned ribbons and places on the day as follows:
Boys – Blake Brunsdon U10's 3rd boards; Garth Watson U11's 5th flags; Peter Perkinson U11's 4th iron-person, 6th swim and 6th boards; David Perkinson U13's 4th boards, 5th swim and 5th iron-person.
Girls – Lucy Spain U9's 2nd flags, 5th sprint; Hunter Flanders U10's 3rd boards; Peta Salter U12's 2nd sprint, 4th boards, 4th iron-person, 5th swim and 6th flags; Elise Sutherland U13's 1st swim, 3rd iron-person and 6th flags; Kate Shaw U14's 4th swim.
Compared to many of the other clubs competing on the day we are only a small club but our kids put up a great fight and should be congratulated on their achievements and team spirit.

28/01/10: Nambucca Shire Council Australia Day Senior Sports Team Award
![]() |
Their combined age is around 260 years, don't let that fool you because these 'old fellas' have proven that age is no barrier in the world of sport.
For the past five consecutive years the Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Life-saving Club's senior surf boat crew of Jim Brazil, Ralph Johnson, Howard Langford, Keith 'Mooki' McKay, Rob Marshall and John Silver have won medals at the NSW Championships.
The team formed 10 years ago, and under the swift training of sweep 'Mooki', has won six out of the seven State Championships since first attending in 2002.
Their competitive nature has taken them up and down the NSW east coast and as far west as Scarborough Beach in Western Australia and north to Kuwana Beach in Queensland, where they were invited to compete in the in the Australian National Championships from 2004-2006.
The crew's achievements in surf boat rowing saw them receive this year's Nambucca Shire Council Australia Day Senior Sports Team Award.
"It is an honour to be recognised on behalf of seniors everywhere," rower Ralph Johnson said.
"We hope it encourages more seniors to get out there and get involved in sport," he said.

10/12/09: Clare's a top nipper
![]() |
Scotts Head nipper Claire Spain came away from her first carnival at South West Rocks recently with a swag of ribbons and a special award when she became the winner of the Newcastle Permanent Nipper of the Week.
Claire managed to overcome inclement conditions on the day and her opponents, with an enthusiastic attitude that impressed many old hands, and saw her walk away with a $30 cheque and a hat from Newcastle Permanent.
Club activities are in full swing, with the juniors active each weekend, regular patrols keeping the beach safe, and squad in training for their surf life-saving certificates, bronze medallions and IRB crewman's certificates.
Members are also advised to keep Sunday, December 20 clear because the seniors will hold their Christmas party at the Scotts Head clubhouse on that afternoon, with all members welcome to attend.
While there, members should also take the opportunity to check out the clubhouse as the restoration of many of the historical photographs, under the guidance of Ralph Johnson, has helped to add to the recent paintwork and restorations done there.

05/11/09: Surf club gears up for home carnival
With just over 60 patrolling members having passed their proficiency tests on Sunday, October 25 the Macksville Scotts Head Surf Life Saving season is again in full swing, with the beach being regularly patrolled by proficient members.
The Sunday was a busy day for the club, with the Nippers beginning their season on the same day and a large number of juniors available on the day, ensuring a strong future for the club.
Those members who were unable to attend the proficiencies on that Sunday can take the opportunity to catch up on their qualifications on Saturday, November 14.
The club has been given permission by the branch and by New South Wales SLS to use the services of an assessor from Sydney who will be at Scotts Head for the carnival that weekend to allow members a second opportunity to pass their proficiencies.
That Saturday will also see the first day of the club's annual carnival weekend, with competition for all members on either the Saturday or Sunday and the promise of some exciting events for anyone looking for beachside entertainment that weekend.
The Bronze and Surf Life Saving Certificate training squad will have an introductory training morning this Saturday, November 7 at the clubhouse at 9am. Anyone interested in joining the squad for either of these qualifications is welcome.
At this stage the club is also looking at running a First Aid Course in mid January.
While primarily an award for SLS members it is also possible for members of the public to use this qualification, so contact the club if you are interested in doing this course.

17/09/09: Surf life-saving season kicks off
![]() |
As the footy season draws to its highly-anticipated close this weekend, our local surf life-saving clubs are shaking out the cobwebs and getting ready for the 2009/10 season which officially begins again on Saturday, October 3.
With the year 2010 being the centenary of surf life-saving at Nambucca Heads, the club is looking to stretch their celebrations over the next two seasons, while the Macksville-Scotts Head club is again hoping to build on the strength of their boat crews in particular with at least five crews already in training under the guidance of boat captain Butch Laverty.
Greg Bell again takes the club president's role at Scotts, with Ralph Johnson as the secretary, Chris Stewart as club captain, and Ken Atkins running the Nippers, while at Nambucca Terry Newley takes over from the late Bob Hurley as president with Carol Hill picking up the paperwork and Kevin 'The Pest' Morrison stepping into the club captain's role.
Nambucca SLSC stalwart Jim McCullagh heads the Nippers division for the coming season and both clubs are having registration and sign-on days over the next few weeks for their youngsters.
There is no better way for kids to learn surf survival skills, develop self confidence and enjoy friendly rivalry than by joining their local Nippers, and Nambucca and Scotts clubs especially welcome newcomers to the lifesaving movement.
With patrols at both our local centres beginning on the October long weekend, the rosters are out and Jane Morrison's patrol kicks off at Nambucca, while David Brunsdon's squad has the honour at Scotts.
IRB training starts at Nambucca clubhouse tonight (17th) at 6.30pm for those interested.
The photo above shows recently awarded life member of Macksville-Scotts Head SLSC, this season's chief instructor and Nambucca Heads High School teacher Bill Richardson with four of his students Tiara, Alexandra, Hanna and Tahnee from rival surf club Nambucca Heads.
Two of those students, Tiara Hill and Hannah Iredale, are off to America next week to compete in a cross-country running series in a number of states and their school and club wish them all the best as they represent the Nambucca.
Remember this season to bathe between the yellow and red flags, and if you can't be convinced to join the surf life saving movement, at least stop for a chat with your local patrol members who give up their time to ensure that our local beaches are safe.

26/02/09: Surf club takes three boat crews to state
![]() |

![]() |
Three Macksville-Scotts Head boat crews will contest the state titles at Newcastle this weekend.
The men's teams, rowing in the 240 and 220 divisions, will compete on Friday, while the Under-23s women's team will take to the water on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The women's team is expected to perform well, after winning the open women's section in the Country Championships recently.
The team has dropped back to the Under-23s section to contest the state titles, which will include up to 80 teams from all over NSW.
The team, made up of Ashlee Noble, Caitlin Hockey, Melissa Bell and Stacey Cooper will have Keith McKay as their sweep for the competition.
All three teams competing will be using the surf boat Cactus, and new oars and a carbin fibre sweep oar donated by the Nambucca Hotel.
The men's teams are also competing in age divisions, with the total combined ages of the rowers adding up to more than their division number.
Club spokesman Butch Laverty said the divisions were all very competitive, and the teams were looking forward to a good day of rowing on Friday.
The 220s competition will be contested by the team of Butch Laverty, Michael Coulter, Allan Hall and Darryl Perks, with Garry Johnson as sweep.
The 240s team is Jim Brazel, Howard Langford, Robert Marshall and Ralph Johnson, with Keith McKay as sweep.
In the lead-up to the competition, the teams have been working on their fitness by rowing seven-kilometre courses up and down the Nambucca River from the boat shed at Macksville.
On Sundays, the crews meet at Scotts Head to work on their starts and turning in the surf.
Butch Laverty said the sport was currently experiencing a boom in popularity, and the Macksville-Scotts Head club was hoping that more people would join in over the next 12 months. The club currently has six teams.

24/01/09: Row for gold

In the best-ever result for a Macksville-Scotts Head women's boat crew at a state carnival, four locals rowed to victory in the open event at Bonny Hills on the weekend.
Gold medals were presented to Stacey Cooper, Rebecca Mitchell, Caitlin Hockey and Ashlee Noble after their unexpected victory against the other strong teams.
Three members of the crew, Stacey, Caitlin and Ashlee, normally row with a crew member from Glen Innes. However, when she was unavailable due to illness, the team, that usually competes in the Under-23 competition, had to find a last minute replacement. Rebecca Mitchell stepped into the spot at the last minute and helped her teammates to victory.
The team remained undefeated in the open women's event on the weekend. The event was relocated from Tacking Point to Bonny Hills, due to poor surf conditions. Stacey said the conditions were trying and more than one team was affected by injury.
"It was carnage - there were dislocated shoulders, cuts and blood everywhere and head injuries," she said.
"Some girls had to be taken to hospital."
In the final event, the Macksville-Scotts Head crew faced off against Bonny Hills, Taree, Old Bar and Port Macquarie. The Macksville-Scotts Head team was the only one to get out over the break on the first go, giving them the perfect start to the race. A combination of good starts and turns secured the win, with a ride back on a nice wave sealing the victory.
It was the best result of the North Coast Boat Series season for the team and the most successful meet a women's rowing team from Macksville-Scotts Head has ever had.
The crew put its success down to power and technique. Ashlee said the team worked together, did their absolute best and came out on top. Despite the last minute change of team, there was lots of experience in the boat.
Ashlee and Stacey have been rowing together for six years, while Caitlin has been competing for two. Rebecca has also rowed ‘off and on’ locally. The crew, which is sponsored by the Bowraville Hotel, usually trains four days a week leading up to an event.
The gold medals were also the first for the new boat, Cactus, which has been in the water for about 18 months. The season began in August and will continue until March.
Ashlee said it was difficult to say where the team stood in the overall rankings, because it had been plagued with crew problems throughout the season. They will now work towards the branch championships in Bonny Hills in two weeks.
The team is looking for women interested in taking up rowing and asks people who are interested to contact the team, or head coach Steve Russo.

24/01/09: Aaron sets high standard for Nambucca Valley youth
Completing his bronze medallion was just a way to be able to take up surfing as a school sport for Nambucca Shire's Young Citizen of the Year Aaron Burton.
Two years on, the 16-year-old can be found at Scotts Head Beach every weekend, volunteering his time to patrol the local beaches.
He is a member of the Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Lifesaving Club, but is on the beach every weekend on top of his rostered days once a month. Aaron is now vice captain of one patrol and captain of another, meaning he has to coordinate other volunteer surf lifesavers to keep holiday-makers and local beach-goers safe in Scotts Head's waters.
"I enjoy being down here at the beach and I would like to get into a paid surf lifesaving position, if it comes up," he said. He would also like to obtain his rescue rubber duck licence, which he is currently in training for. He will be able to sit the test when he turns 17.
Aaron was part of the volunteer squad that helped salvage a fishing boat off the coast at the end of last year.
As well as surf-lifesaving, Aaron is a keen amateur film-maker. He recently spent a week at Bellingen's Camp Creative to improve his skills and would like to move into the industry after he graduates from Macksville High School.

19/01/09: Lifesavers shine at Country titles
Port Macquarie and Tacking Point surf lifesaving clubs achieved top 10 placings at the 2009 Stramit NSW Country Championships at Lighthouse Beach yesterday.
For the second consecutive year, South Coast's Warilla Barrack Point won the overall pointscore title.
Featuring more than 240 events over three days of competition, the Stramit NSW Country Championships boasted all age groups from under eights to 60+years, and included almost every surf sports discipline from the flags to rescue and resuscitation, ironman and surf boats.
Day three concluded with a new event, a 2km beach run, followed by a traditional march past with belt and reel and teams sporting club colours.
Warilla Barrack Point won the overall pointscore with 647 points, ahead of Lennox-Head Alstonville on 546.
Byron Bay managed to slide into third position with 505 points, in front of Cudgen Headlands on 474. Port Macquarie locked down fifth spot with 379.5 points while host Tacking Point finished ninth, accumulating 262.5.
The Warilla Barrack Point competitors were all over the teams' events, with Blair and Ali Day, Hayden White, Ben Prior and Emma Carberry featuring strongly. Despite slipping to fourth position, Cudgen lifesavers were everywhere, with top performers again being Robbie Miles, Jarrod Cain, Scott McCartney and Rohan Small.
Byron's rise to third spot in the overall pointscore was bolstered by the efforts of the women. Shannon Hulbert-Green won gold medals in the under 17 female rescue tube, open board rescue, under 17 board relay and a host of team events. Team mate Kim Chappel also dominated most disciplines she contested, taking out the open double ski race with Tahnee Fleming. In local results, Tacking Point's Trent Harrison came second in the under 19 male sprint.
Port Macquarie secured the under 17 sprint relay and the under eight, under 11 and under 13 beach relay and Tacking Point won the under nine and under 10 categories. Port Macquarie also claimed the all age relay. The 2km beach run was dominated by Warilla Barrack Point in the open category, with Blake James, Blair Day and Matt Hill placing first, second and third.
Shellharbour took out the trifecta in the masters section. Shellharbour also won the open march past with Port Macquarie second, while Sawtell picked up the junior march past, followed by Coffs Harbour and Tacking Point.

16/12/08: Surf, Fun and Leadership
The 2009 Mid North Coast Junior Leadership Camp held last December have been hailed as one of the most successful ever.
77 junior lifesavers from local surf clubs on the Mid North Coast were joined by 18 adult leaders at the Bonny Hills Conference centre, for a weekend of personal and group activities and challenges.
This event is part of an overall future leaders program which is designed to identify members at an early age who show potential as future leaders of the organization and include them in a development program that provides ongoing personal development as they progress in the movement. Such a program ensures a steady succession of leaders into local clubs and ensures the future viability of all clubs.
Sponsored by the Newcastle Permanent Building Society, this development camp has been successfully conducted for over 10 years and sees the juniors participate in team building, communication, leadership and personal development activities - all designed to build their confidence and equip them as future leaders of the organization.
Newcastle Permanent provided significant financial support for the camp, as well as providing all participants with a commemorative gift bag and rash shirt.
The Camp kicked off on Friday evening, with a range of activities designed to help participants get to know each other. Attendees were then split up into activity groups and faced a series of team building challenges which helped the groups develop some camaraderie and team spirit.
The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday morning, when the participants took on the ocean to learn how to upright a rolled over IRB. Another favourite was learning to rescue a drowning patient with the use of a rescue board. Many more events were enjoyed through out the morning. In the afternoon the participants were put to the test with facing team work and endurance challenges.
Sunday morning the participants were taught how to do simple core strength exercises and stretches and how to combine a proper diet to help with the rigorous activities held in surf lifesaving events.

25/09/08: Surf patrols jeopardised
Opposition to Macksville/Scotts Head Surf Club's plan to expand its storage space could see the end of beach patrols in the area.
Club president Greg Bell said existing storage space under the club's premises was cramped and had been identified as an OH&S risk. To overcome this, the club had submitted a development application (DA) to council to construct a brick and tile double lock-up garage adjacent to the existing clubhouse on Crown land leased from the Scotts Head Reserve Trust.
Mr Bell said although the DA had not yet gone public, there was 'uniform opposition' to the project from some sectors of the Scotts Head community. The club had applied for a Sport and Recreation grant for $90,000 and would have to make up the shortfall of the total cost - around $142,000.
"There was no problem initially," Mr Bell said. "But for some reason or other, there is now. In my opinion, the community has been misinformed from some source. I don't know what the problem is. I think the main complaint is that some people think it will block access to Little Beach. This is wrong, it won't," Mr Bell said.
"The other belief is that it will take up land regularly used by families. This, too, is wrong - it won't. Part of the problem, I think, is that some people thought it was going to be a tin shed instead of the brick and tile construction planned."
The club provides beach patrols throughout the surf season (from the end of September until ANZAC Day), helping maintain a safe beach for local families and tourists.
"The construction of the shed is imperative to the ongoing community service provided by the club," Mr Bell said. "If it is stopped because of this opposition, it will definitely impact on the safety of beach users and also on the local economy."
While there was opposition from some areas, Mr Bell said there was also strong support for the development from local business people and community groups.
He hoped commonsense would prevail.

16/09/08: Surf lifesaving history on show
Coffs Harbour Regional Museum is currently playing host to a National Museum of Australia touring exhibition celebrating the centenary of surf lifesaving.
It was the only venue on the North Coast of NSW invited to host the display.
"It's a real honour for the Museum to be chosen for this exhibition and shows how the staff and volunteers have forged very constructive links with key institutions in the short time since it was reopened," said Stephen Sawtell, Council's General Manager. "It also indicates how its reputation is growing as a quality, regional venue for this kind of national display."
The history of surf lifesaving in Australia and the joys and dangers of the beach are explored in 'Between the Flags: 100 Years of Surf Lifesaving'.
The interactive exhibition, which is on show at the Museum from August 25 - October 18 2008, traces the proud history of the surf lifesaving movement.
It looks at the golden age of lifesaving, when the lifesaver joined the bushman and the digger as national icons. It traces changing technologies, the push to admit women to the ranks, the emergence of surf sport competitions, and the lifesaver's cultural icon status at events including the Sydney Olympic ceremonies.
The exhibition, developed with Surf Life Saving Australia, has a number of interactive exhibits and includes surf caps from across the nation, rescue gear, medallions and a surfboard with a shark bite taken out of it.
The exhibition includes personal stories from surf lifesavers, historic beach footage and fun activities for children.
The Museum is open from 10am-4pm, every Tuesday-Saturday.
